Canadian Government Music Grants

The Canadian government provides many opportunities for artists to receive a helping hand financially. Musicians especially have several grant options available to them. Everything from travel expenses to festival programming grants are awarded annually to a handful of musicians who apply.
  1. Grants to Professional Musicians (Individuals): Classical Music

    • The government created this program to provide Canadian musicians working in classical music of any culture worldwide with grants to pursue a creative project. The Council of the Arts defines musicians as "instrumentalists, singers, composers, arrangers, conductors and opera stage directors." There are three categories under which musicians can apply: emerging artists, mid-career artists and established artists. The grants range from $3,000 to $20,000 (Canadian), and are dispersed over the length of the project, which should be no longer than a year. Costs covered by each grant are limited to "subsistence, transportation and project expenses." All applications must be submitted by mail, fax or email, by the appropriate deadline, to:

      André Jutras

Travel Grants to Professional Musicians (Individuals)

    • The Canadian government recognizes that musicians need to travel and explore other cultures in order to acquire knowledge and experience for their creative projects. The Council of the Arts awards grants to individual musicians ranging from $500 to $2,500 (Canadian), depending on the travel distance required. The funds are specifically to cover transportation, including air fare, train tickets and even taxi fare. They are not to be used for meals or other daily expenses. In addition, the trip itself must be purely for the study of a certain musical culture and not to give a performance, teach or record. All applications must be submitted by mail, fax or email, by the appropriate deadline, to:

      André Jutras
      Music Section Officer
      Canada Council for the Arts
      350 Albert Street, P.O. Box 1047

    Commissioning of Canadian Compositions

    • The Canadian composition grant covers both classical and non-classical musicians who are willing to create a piece of work that specifically represents the spirit of Canada. The grant is not to be used for personal music projects. Unlike other grants, commissioners must apply for the grant, so that they, in turn, may use it to pay a composer's fee. The commissioners do not need to be Canadian, but the composers must be. While the funding varies for non-classical projects, it can be as high as $20,000 (Canadian) for those who are creating classical or operatic pieces. All applications must be submitted by mail, fax or email, by the appropriate deadline, to:

      Aimé Dontiogny, Program Officer
      Music Section
      Canada Council for the Arts
      350 Albert Street, P.O. Box 1047

    Music Festival Programming Project Grants

    • The Council of the Arts provides grants to those who wish to put together a music festival; however, the selection of artists must include Canadians and the style of music should feature "elements of artistic risk and vision that challenges audiences." This grant promotes Canadian culture alongside education about other cultures. Each festival programmer must clearly lay out his or her specific artistic vision in order to receive funding. The maximum grants available are $20,000 (Canadian). The money is to be used to cover the costs of funding the artists and the festival production and promotion. All applications must be submitted by mail, fax or emai,l by the appropriate deadline, to:

      Karen Barber-Ing, Program Officer
      Canada Council for the Arts
      350 Albert Street, P. O. Box 1047
