How to Create Tracks on Logic Pro

Logic Pro from Apple Studios is a widely-used, essential tool for recording and editing audio and music. Logic Pro allows you to edit music by dividing each of your recorded instruments or sounds into different "tracks." Learning how to create a track using Apple's Logic Pro software is the first step in recording your music.

Instructions

  1. Creating a Basic Track

    • 1

Launch Logic Pro by double-clicking its icon. Click on the "plus" button next to "Global Tracks" to open a "New Tracks" window.

    • 2

Check the box next to "multi-timbral" if you want to create a track for multiple instruments. Deselect this box to create a single instrument track.

    • 3

Click on the "Audio" radio button to create an audio track. Click on "Software Instrument" if you are using a built-in instrument, or click "External MIDI" if you are using an external MIDI device like a keyboard.

    • 4

Select "Mono," "Stereo" or "Surround Sound," depending on your preference. Click on "Input Monitoring" if you want to hear audio through your computer speakers as Logic records it.

    • 5

Select the number of tracks you would like to create. If you are recording both a guitar and bass player, for example, enter "2" into the "Number" field in the "New Tracks" window. Click "Create" to create the tracks.

    Advanced Track Options

    • 6

Click on the "Track" menu in the local menu bar, then click "New with Next MIDI Channel." This allows you to create multiple tracks that use the same MIDI channel. This can be helpful when using, for example, a MIDI drum kit: you can have one track for the snare and one for the bass. This allows you to independently mute or change the settings for individual sounds in the drum kit.

    • 7

Click on the "Track" menu in the local menu bar, then click "New with Same Channel Instrument" to create a track with the same channel instrument as a previous track. This allows you to easily create a new track for a different instrument, while preserving the same channel type and settings.

    • 8

Click on "Track," then click "New for Selected Regions" to create a new track for the selected regions on a track. Logic will remove the selected regions from the old track and insert them into the new track. If you select regions across multiple tracks, Logic will create a new track for each source track.
