How to Save Your Projects From Sonar 8.5 on an External Hard Drive

The cost and availability of external hard drives has made them a popular storage option. USB 2.0 has simplified the process connecting fast external devices. Cakewalk's SONAR music-production software features several formats for saving data, any of which can take advantage of the flexibility of an external drive. With a fast external drive and CPU, you may be able to use the drive for your working copies. However, you would need to set up the drive before beginning your project. Otherwise, "bundle" files save all the data from your project for transfer or backup.

Instructions

  1. Using ".CWP" Files

    • 1

Click on "Create a New Project" from the SONAR X1 Quick Start menu. In the pop-up window, name the project and select your external drive for the Location field. Be sure that the Audio Path field updates also. Click the check box beside "Store Project Audio in its own Folder," then select the template as you normally would.

    • 2

Select "Options" from the toolbar and "Global" from the drop-down menu. Select the "Audio Data" and "Folders" tabs to adjust the default folders if you will be working exclusively from data files on an external drive.

    • 3

Save your work, which will be in the ".CWP" format by default. SONAR saves audio data separately, but SONAR created the audio directories on the external drive because you selected the external drive in the Location field when you opened your project. Your data is now saved entirely to the external drive.

    Using ".BUN" Files

    • 4

Open a project on your internal hard drive. At the Quick Start screen, name your project but do not change the location of the project or its audio data, which should be on an internal drive. Proceed with your project normally and save it to your internal hard drive.

    • 5

Create a "bundle" file when your project is complete or is ready to have an archive copy made. Click on "File" on the toolbar and select "Save As" from the drop-down menu. In the dialog window, click the down arrow to the right of "Save in:" and choose your external drive. Create a new folder if desired. Click the down arrow to the right of "Save as type:" and choose "Cakewalk Bundle" from the list.

    • 6

Click "Save." By default, all audio data associated with the ".CWP" file will be saved together with the file itself, so a ".BUN" format file contains all data and audio associated with the project file, a complete copy of everything you need. You can delete the original file from the internal drive to free disk space if needed. You can reload the project from the ".BUN" file at a later time.
