How to Use Auto on Mixcraft 4

Mixcraft, made by Acoustica, is a digital audio workstation for Windows. It has recording, editing and mixing functionality, and supports both audio and MIDI input. One of the advantages of using a digital audio workstation, or "DAW," is the ease of editing. Because audio and MIDI display visually, you can make edits based the visual representations of sound waves. In addition, Mixcraft has an automated editing tool called "Auto Beat Match," or "Auto" for short, which matches tempo, beat and key so that you know what speeds, rhythms and notes to use. This function assists you in making mix-tapes, mash-ups and remixes.

Instructions

  1. Set Up

    • 1

Double-click the desktop icon to open Mixcraft. It may take a moment for the program to fully launch.

    • 2

Click "File," and select "Open" and "New." This opens a blank session interface into Mixcraft.

    • 3

Click "File" and select "New Audio." Type "2" in the box where it reads "1."

    Matching

    • 4

Click on the first audio channel to highlight it. Click "File," and select "Import" and "Audio." Select an audio clip from your library. Repeat this process for the second audio channel.

    • 5

Press "CTRL+Z" on your keyboard to zoom in on the audio. This enlarges the waveform graphics, making it easier to match the start of each audio clip.

    • 6

Click "Tools" and click on the scissors icon to select the "Trim" tool. Drag your mouse cursor from left to right to trim the silence from the beginning of both tracks, so that the first volume peaks on each track line up together. The flat line before the first peak on the sound wave graphic represents the silence.

    • 7

Click the "Project Details" tab to view beat data, including the beats per minute, or BPM, readout. This is typically between 110 and 130 BPM. The default setting for most DAW is 120 BMP.

    • 8

Type the tempo of the faster audio into the BPM box of the slower audio to adjust the tempo of the slower audio. Auto Beat Match will automatically speed up the slower track so that it is the same tempo as the faster track.

    Mixing

    • 9

Open a single audio track. Load two audio clips into the track so that they are right next to each other.

    • 10

Click "Project Details" to determine the BPM of both clips.

    • 11

Click "Tools" and click on the scissors icon to select the "Trim" tool. Trim the audio as above so that you have no silence at the beginning of either clip.

    • 12

Click on the time line approximately ten seconds into the second audio track and enter the BPM of the first track into the second track. This makes the first seconds of the second track match the tempo of the previous track. You can use this application to create a mix-tape where songs need to flow seamlessly into each other.

    • 13

Double-click on the timeline just before the join between the two audio clips. This will allow you edit the tempo. Enter a slightly increased or decreased tempo just before the second audio track. If the second audio clip is faster, speed up the tempo. If it is slower, slow the tempo down. Click on the join and add an even more increased or decreased tempo. Click just before the original marker to make a third tempo marker, so that you can make the tempo speed up or slow down to meet the original tempo of the second track.
