Connect your DAW and output section to prepare for recording. The Xenyx mixers offer two connections for output, using either RCA plugs from the "CD/Tape" output or 1/4-inch phone plugs from the "Main Out" jacks. Both outputs are in the upper-right section of the mixer. Monitoring can be done using headphones plugged into the "Phones" jack or by way of a speaker system connected to the "Control Room Out" jacks, also in the upper-right section.
Connect microphone sources to XLR channels (Channels 1 and 2 on the 1002FX and Channels 1 to 4 on the 1202FX). Line sources can be connected to any channel. For the most versatility, connect stereo instruments like keyboards or musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) modules to the dedicated stereo channels (Channels 3 to 10 on the 1002FX and Channels 5 to 12 on the 1202FX).
Adjust the "Trim" control on the microphone sources to provide pre-amplification to the mic signal. Phantom power is also available for condenser microphones using the button above the "Main Mix" fader on the right of each model. Equalization can also be used on the XLR channels regardless of mic or instrument input. Balance the mix of sound sources using the "Level" control at the bottom of each individual channel.
Add effects to the signal of any or all channels by using the "FX" control to send the signal to the internal effects unit of each model. Choose an effect by turning the "Program" knob to show the number corresponding to the desired effect, then pressing the knob to select it. Set the output level of the effect by adjusting the "FX to Main" knob. Direct the effect to monitors by pressing the "FX to CTRL" button.
Record your sound by using the procedures required for your DAW software. General steps required involve routing your input to tracks and arming the tracks prior to recording. Methods vary between DAW products. Refer to your manufacturer's documentation.
