How to Run a Behringer BCF With Sonar

The Behringer BCF 2000 is a universal external MIDI controller for use with digital audio workstations, such as Sonar. With it you can quickly and intuitively alter the MIDI parameters at play in the Sonar session. You can also save MIDI parameter settings to the BCF 2000, so when you open a new session or new channel, the Sonar sends a data command to the BCF. This command makes all of the sliders and dials return to the position they were last in when assigned to that MIDI function. Use the BCF to edit the sound of Sonar MIDI instruments, effects processors, MIDI note length and even MIDI-connected lighting equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a USB cable to the “MIDI Out” jack on the rear of the Behringer BCF 2000. This is where the MIDI command messages are transported, both to and from the Behringer BCF 2000.

    • 2

Connect the other end of this cable to the USB port on your computer. This port is typically located on the side of laptop computers and on the front or rear of desktop machines.

    • 3

Double-click the Sonar desktop icon to launch the program. It may take a few seconds for Sonar to fully launch.

    • 4

Click “Options” and select “MIDI Devices.” This opens a menu of devices connected and installed. Because the Behringer BCF 2000 is USB-enabled, you don’t need to install drivers for it to work with Sonar.

    • 5

Check the box next to Behringer BCF 2000 to assign it as the primary MIDI control device.

    • 6

Click “Controller/Surface” settings. Check the box next to Behringer BCF 2000 to assign it as a Sonar control tool. Although you’ve assigned as the primary MIDI control device, you need to manually tell Sonar the Behringer BCF 2000 can effect changes to MIDI parameters within the Sonar workstation. Otherwise Sonar will not recognize certain MIDI command messages and will only respond to global commands.

    • 7

Check both “Track View” and “Control View” underneath “WAI Display.” This means you can see the Behringer BCF 2000 controls happening in real time in both sonar windows. WAI stands for “where am I?”

    • 8

Assign a color to the “WAI Control.” This makes it easier to distinguish between Behringer BCF 2000 control functions and Sonar control functions.

    • 9

Check the box under "ACT." This enables the Behringer BCF 2000 to access the Sonar control interface.

    • 10

Press a channel number to specify a channel to communicate with. Use the various parameter controls on the Behringer BCF 2000 to alter the parameters within that channel. For example, use the “Volume” slider dial to increase the volume of that channel relative to the other channels.
