Connect the MIDI drum device to the MIDI interface by connecting the "MIDI Out" of the drum device to the "MIDI In" of the MIDI interface. Connect the MIDI interface to the computer by plugging the USB connection cord into the USB slot on the computer.
Turn on the MIDI drum device and then power on the MIDI interface, if it is not already powered on. Open the software or download a free trial version of the application online. Select "File" from the top menu and then click "Add New Track" to create a new file. Right-click the new track in the "Track Pane" and then select "Mono Audio Track" from the drop-down menu.
Click the "View" option from the top menu and then select "Toolbars" and "Metronome." Click the "Count-In" box on the metronome and set the count to "2." Click the "Options" tab from the top menu and then select "MIDI Devices." Select the MIDI drum device from the list of options under the "Inputs" field. Select the computer soundcard from the list of options under the "Outputs" field.
Set the MIDI channel on your MIDI drum device to "1" by selecting "MIDI Options" from the menu on your device. Click "Options" from the top menu in SONAR and then select "MIDI Options" and "Channels." Set the MIDI channel to "1."
Right-click in the "Track Pane" and select "Insert MIDI Track" from the drop-down menu. Arm the track for recording by selecting the "R" located in the "Track Properties." Play the selected notes from your MIDI drum device to practice before you record.
Press the "Record" button at the top of the screen and start playing the notes on your MIDI drum device. Press the "Stop" button at the top of the screen when you're finished recording. Preview the song by pressing the "Play" button.
Save the drum recording to your computer by selecting "File" from the top menu and then clicking "Save."
