How to Make Hip Hop Drum Tracks with Pro Tools Boom Drum

Boom is a drum machine plug-in that comes installed for free with Pro Tools. It features a variety of different electronic drum sounds that are especially useful for composing hip hop drums. Boom includes a sequencer that allows you to easily arrange these drum samples to create beats for your music. In addition, Boom has a number of different preset beats available for you to use if you don't want to take the time to create your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the electronic drum kit you would like to use samples from by clicking the “Drum Kit” drop down menu. Some of the drum kits available include electronic, urban and retro.

    • 2

Click the name of the drum you wish to use in your hip hop track in order to edit its pattern. For instance, click “Kick” to create a pattern for the kick drum using the sequencer.

    • 3

Click the black and white buttons labeled 1 through 16 at the bottom of Boom to select which beats you want the kick drum to hit on. After clicking one of these buttons, a red light will turn on within the button. Click the button again to make the red light dim. This will cause the kick drum sample to be quieter. Click the button again to dim the red light further and make the kick drum sample even quieter. Click the button once more if you wish to turn the red light off, and prevent the kick drum sample from triggering on this beat.

    • 4

Press the “Play” button to hear the beat you have arranged. It will loop continuously until you press the “Stop” button.

    • 5

Repeat the steps as necessary to create patterns using the different elements of the drum kit, such as the snare, hi hat, toms and ride cymbal.

    • 6

Adjust the controls above each drum name to shape the sound of the drum kit.

    • 7

Change the “Tune” control to adjust a drum's pitch. For instance, turning this control to the left will make the drum deeper sounding; turning this control to the right will make the drum pitch higher.

    • 8

Change the “Level” control to adjust the volume of each individual drum sample.

    • 9

Change the “Decay” control to adjust how long each drum sample rings out.

    • 10

Change the “Pan” control to adjust whether the drum sample is panned to the left, right or center.
