How to Make a Hip Hop Beat With Guitar Pro

Guitar Pro is a computer music editing program that allows users to create and notate music. The program simulates many instruments, including the instruments that are typically used in hip hop: drums and bass. You can create hip hop beats in Guitar Pro by writing each instrument's part, testing as you write to make sure that the beat matches your preferences. There are versions of Guitar Pro available for Windows, Mac and Linux, all of which use the same user interface.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Guitar Pro program on your computer and click on the "Track" button in the top-left of the program window. Within the "Track" menu, select the "Add" option, which will open a new window in the middle of the screen. In the new window, highlight the "Percussion" option and then click "OK." This will open a new window where you can choose whether to write in standard notation or tablature. Which item to check depends on your preference, but you can leave both items checked to view the notation in both views simultaneously. Click "OK" once you decide which notation work with.

    • 2

Sample the percussion choices that appear on the new window. Clicking on each choice will play a sound sample of the instrument. When you hear an instrument that you want to include in your beat, notice the number to the left of the name of the instrument. Write down these numbers, as you will use them to insert the instruments when composing your beat. After you have chosen all of your percussion instruments, close the window.

    • 3

Fill up your first bar with sixteenth rests; click on the sixteenth note first, then click on the rest symbol until your measure fills up. For a standard beat in 4/4, this will require 16 sixteenth notes. When the measure is full, move your mouse to the beginning of the measure. Decide where you want your percussion to fit into the measure to create a hip hop feel. Typically, the bass drum plays on the down beats (the first and third beats of the measure), while the snare is used for the back beat (beats two and four), while the hi-hat plays each sixteenth note throughout the measure. There are countless various variations on this. Use this as a template and include your own touches until you are satisfied with the sound of the percussion.

Click on the "Play" button to hear your percussion. To avoid writing out the same measure many times, use the repeat marker at the beginning and end of the measures that you want to loop. When you do this, a new window will appear where you can specify how many times you want the measure to repeat. After you have completed your percussion part, include any other instruments that you want for your beat. Click on "Track" and select the "Instrument" option, after which a new window will appear with available instruments. As with the percussion selection, sample the instruments that you want and remember their corresponding numbers. After you are done, close the window and notice the new line of music that appears for your new instrument(s).

Fill your new measure up with sixteenth rests as before, then insert where you want the instrument(s) to play. Common hip hop melodic instruments include the bass and keyboards. Determine the notes for each instrument and specify the value of each note (quarter-note, half-note, etc.) and where in the measure to play. As you are including instrumentation, press the "Play" button to hear how the instruments sound together with the percussion. Keep in mind to use the repeat markers, if necessary, to save you from having to write the same parts throughout every measure.
