Music School Summer Programs

Summer music programs can be a valuable experience for musicians of all ages. There are programs for everyone, from beginners just starting their musical education to seasoned players, with offerings that include individual instruments, group playing, specific music genres, singing, and even the music business. Some of the most prestigious schools in the United States offer summer programs for students wishing to broaden their musical horizons.
  1. Berklee College of Music

    • Boston's Berklee College of Music offers several summer music programs. They range in length from weekend workshops to a 12-week full-credit programs. Weekend sessions mostly are instrument specific. There are also day sessions, geared toward middle schoolers, which allow students to experience all "Berklee College of Music has to offer," according to Berklee's official website. There are workshops in music business, guitar, voice, production, music for video games, songwriting and stage performance. Most programs require students to be at least 15 years old and have at least six months of playing or singing experience. The 12-week program allows students enrolled in Berklee to gain a full semester's worth of college credit. Berklee also offers two off-campus programs. One is held at Long Beach City College in Long Beach, California, and focuses on songwriting, production, stage performance, and music business. The other program is in Dublin, Ireland, and focuses on improvisation.

    Cornish College of the Arts

    • Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington, offers a summer program for musicians between the ages of 12 and 19. Some workshops, such as Robert Dick Flute Masterclass and Improvisation require students to be at least 14, while Classical Persian Music requires students to be at least 16 years old. Other workshops include: Chamber Strings, Jazz, Intro to Latin Jazz, Songwriting, and Classical Voice Intensive. Each workshop lasts a week, and each must be enrolled in separately. The workshops are conducted by Cornish faculty as well as special guest artists.

    The Juilliard School

    • Juilliard offers three summer jazz programs for kids and college age adults. Summer Jazz Residency is a one-week program for students ages 14 to 18, and takes place in Atlanta, Georgia. The program accepts only students who play trumpet, double or electric bass, saxophone, trombone, guitar, piano, or drums. The Juilliard International Jazz Camp, held in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Great Washington, and takes place in Scotland, Maryland. The camp, which lasts five days, is for students in grades six through 12 and accepts the same instruments listed for the Summer Jazz Residency. Juilliard Jazz Workshop at Snow College is for students 14 through college age. It's goal is to provide students a chance to learn in an intensive, focused environment. Students have both group and private lessons, and will give a concert at the end of the workshop.
