The Eastman School of Music hosts several summer music programs for teens. Music Horizons is a three-week program that trains students in solo performance on piano, organ, guitar, voice and all orchestral instruments. Students receive two private lessons per week, along with group ensemble training and history and theory courses. Summer Jazz Studies features master classes, jam sessions, and theory and composition training; students receive a CD of their final performance. Eastman also offers a five-day wind ensemble workshop for soloists on all wind instruments, as well as percussionists. The workshop culminates in a concert. Teens can also take advantage of Eastman's collegiate institutes in classical guitar, trumpet, trombone, percussion, viola and world music. Tuition varies by program and whether a student selects a commuter or residential option. A recommendation is required along with an audition tape or CD.

Northwestern University is home to the National High School Music Institute, which admits 180 musicians each summer and gives them a taste of what it is like to study music at the college level. Past participants in the institute have gone on to careers as music professors, opera singers and orchestra members. Institute students receive private lessons and participate in group ensembles. They also take courses in music history and theory during the five-week program. Seminars on applying to music schools are also offered. Applicants must audition in person or submit a digital recording of their 10-to-15-minute audition. Campers reside on Northwestern's campus for the duration of the program. A limited number of scholarships are available to offset the cost of the $4,700 tuition.
