Summer Dance Programs for College Students

The dance industry is a cutthroat profession, and every ounce of training received makes a difference, especially for pre-professional dancers. Students studying dance in college--whether ballet, contemporary or jazz--often give their summers to additional dance instruction with hopes of giving themselves an edge over students of comparable skill levels. Several colleges and academies across the U.S. offer rigorous dance programs during the summer for these dance-driven individuals.
  1. UNCSA Summer Session

    • The University of North Carolina School for the Arts offers a five-week dance seminar that focuses on classical ballet and contemporary styles, as well as classes dedicated to technique and dance concepts. The university's dance program has graduated many dancers into all of the world's major dance companies. Throughout the session, students are taught by the university's renowned faculty, as well as by guest artists and lecturers. Students are separated by skill level--not age--so everyone learns alongside individuals of comparable abilities. The program lasts from mid-June to late July, ending with a session performance for students' families and friends.

    Academy of Ballet Summer Program

    • The Academy of Ballet in San Francisco offers a rigorous, six-week dance program that takes place from July to August. The program is for individuals studying dance or preparing for careers in dance. It's also great for people who want some additional training. Students are separated by skill level and given individual attention by the academy's faculty throughout the session. Classes include pointe, variation, technique and pas de deux. The course ends with a studio performance to apply what students have learned throughout the program.

    Colorado College Summer Dance Programs

    • Colorado College in Colorado Springs offers an annual Dance Festival, which lasts about three weeks in June and July. The festival was founded in 2004, and it educates dancers in college and other pre-professional dancers in an intense and enlightening summer program that includes courses in technique and various dance styles. The program lasts six hours every day, focusing on modern dance--from aerial and ballet to improv and yoga--and practice studios are available for people who want to rehearse during the evening. At the end of the program, students showcase dances they choreographed, and a group performance will wrap up the three weeks.
