U.S. Music Schools for Talented Teenagers

Aspiring teen musicians have many choices when it comes to music schools. There is a wide array of schools scattered throughout the United States which provide opportunities for talented teens to hone their crafts. Many of these schools offer comprehensive programs that allow students to discover specific areas of music they want to pursue.
  1. Comparing Schools

    • Some of the biggest differences in music schools involve the way in which they’re run. A number of schools are publicly funded while others are private and charge tuition. Also, while some schools are solely arts-based, others offer general academics courses as well. Another difference is that some schools operate full-time music programs, whereas others only offer weekly classes.

    Public Schools

    • The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing Arts in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, admits students in grades 9 through 12 by audition. It offers instrumental and vocal music curricula. Tuacahn High School in Ivins, Utah is a charter school which offers general education and performing arts classes. Students are accepted for grades 9 through 12. The School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, Ohio, serves grades 4 through 12 and requires an audition for admittance. SCPA offers college-prep along with instrumental and vocal music programs.

    Private Schools

    • The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California, teaches students in grades 9 through 12 in choral music, instrumental training and music theory through their Upper School. The Professional Performing Arts School in New York, New York, offers academics along with instrumental and vocal music through a partnership with the Harlem School of the Arts. Conservatory Prep Senior High in Davie, Florida offers general education, visual arts and performing arts courses for grades 8 through 12. Admission requirements include interviews, recommendations and psychological testing.

    Conservatories and Music Schools

    • The Southwest Conservatory of Music in Orange County, California, features music courses for students of all ages in music theory, technique, ear training sight reading and performance. The Lucy Moses School at Kaufman Center in New York, New York, offers advanced musicianship classes for young students in instrumental music, vocal music, music theory and more. The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, offers classes for all ages in jazz, voice and recording among others.
