How to Drum With Pencils

Playing drums for a few minutes during the day is a great way to relieve stress and tension. Almost any object can be turned into a makeshift drum. Pencils work very well as drumsticks and, in fact, there is now a pencil drumstick market that caters to drummers that have to work during the day. A drumstick pencil has a drum tip at one end and a pencil tip at the other. When the time comes from a drum break, simply turn the pencils around and begin drumming.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a pair of drumstick pencils. Drumstick pencils are pencils with a drum tip at the eraser end. The drumstick pencil can be used as a pencil or a drumstick. The other option is to use the eraser tip of a regular pencil as a drum tip.

Set up a makeshift drum kit on your desk. Use the wood top of the desk, a phone book, a glass or cup and various other objects to produce different sounds.

Learn the matched grip and traditional grip techniques. Rock drummers tend to prefer the matched grip, while jazz drummers typically use the traditional grip. Both hands grip the drumsticks the same way in the matched grip style. Grip the pencil with your palms face down. Lightly rest your fingertips on the pencil. Use your index finger or thumb to support the pencil. For the traditional style, place your palms face up. Straighten your index and middle fingers and fold your ring and little finger into the palm. Rest the pencil in your palm between your thumb and fingers. Lightly close your index and middle fingers on the stick to secure it.

Start drumming with the pencil drumsticks. Use the left hand to play a snare drum beat and use the right hand for cymbals and tom tom drum sounds and effects. Practice drum rolls with the left and right hands. Hold the pencil drumstick lightly so that it has room to bounce when you strike the surface. Practice hitting the surface and allow the tip to bounce several times.
