Plan the sunset image you would like to create. Sunsets can include different shades of purple, oranges or blues. Plus, the sunset can include additional subjects such as a tree, mountain range, lake or boat. Choose to draw the sunset at a landscape angle to take advantage of objects in the foreground.
Sketch lightly the position of the horizon line and any objects in the image with a purple pencil. Purple blends easily with the tone of the sunset, while the outlines help you position the different objects in the foreground.
Block out the main colors of the sunset using the pastel pencils. The background consists of a graduation of color from the horizon upwards to the top of the page. First, draw a block of purple in the background then blend a layer of pale pink above the purple. Hold the pastel pencil at a shallow angle against the surface of the paper.
Choose a tone of warm orange and add a layer of it directly above the pale pink. Then, use a golden yellow at the top of the sky for the final layer. The layers do not have to be identical in size because each sunset is individual. If you have a picture of a sunset you have enjoyed particularly, then copy the tones of the sunset.
Blend the sunset colors using a pencil stump or your finger. Make a pencil stump by wrapping white paper around the nib of a pencil. Then, rub the stump across the area where each layer of color meets. Change the white paper when you blend the next set of colors to prevent mixing the wrong colors together. This will give more fluidity to the sunset.
Create texture in the foreground of the sunset where either water, a field or buildings are positioned. For example, put the pastel paper on top of mesh and then shade on top of the paper with green pastel pencil. This creates a lumpy texture on the paper to create a mottled appearance. Sandpaper or brick could also be used to create different textures.
Add basic detailing to the sunset image. For example, use a black pastel pencil to create shadowing. Do this sparingly to avoid detracting from the bright sunset colors. Alternatively, add the outline of figures inside a building's window or on the deck of a boat. Sharpen your pastel pencil before you do this to make crisp lines. The tips of waves can be defined using a dark blue, sharp pastel pencil. Highlight the peaks of the waves with white pastel.
