Music Festivals in the Northeast U.S.

Most people go to concerts of their favorite artists or to clubs to hear live songs, but another option is to attend a music festival. The Northeast United States, which is home to major performing/recording cities such as New York City and Detroit, is one of the best areas to investigate for a good festival.
  1. All Points West Music & Arts Festival

    • The All Points West Music & Arts Festival is hosted by AEG/Goldenvoice. It is a relatively new festival, as it was founded in 2008. The location of the festival as of 2010 is Liberty State Park of Jersey City, New Jersey. The festival lasts approximately 3 days around the beginning of August and features art and comedy in addition to music. Previous artists who have performed at this festival include Heartless Bastards, Q-tip, and Flying Lotus, as the festival leans toward hip hop, garage, and rock/pop. Tickets are approximately $90 per day or $240 for the entire festival as of 2010.

    Detroit Electronic Music Festival

    • The Detroit Electronic Music Festival, as the name implies, is a festival designed to celebrate electronic artists and composers. All of the music and associated events relate in some way to music that has been digitally/technologically created or altered, with the techno genre being at the forefront. This festival is held in late May (on Memorial Day weekend) and is hosted by the Paxahau company. This festival has changed management several times since its creation, thus many people also know this festival by the names Fuse-In and Movement.

    Newport Jazz Festival

    • The Newport Jazz Festival, also known as the George Wein Carefusion Festival, is a jazz festival hosted in Newport, Rhode Island. The festival is in its 55th year as of 2010 and features both traditional and contemporary jazz. Previous artists include Brandford Marsalis, Christian McBride and the Dave Brubeck Quartet. This festival is held in early August. Tickets are required, but as of February 2010, ticket prices and purchase information were unavailable from the festival website.

    Wheatland Music Festival

    • The Wheatland Music Festival is a music festival held on 160 sprawling acres in the small town of Remus, Michigan. The festival leans toward traditional folk and bluegrass music. It is held the first weekend after Labor Day in September. This festival is a good option for individuals with children, as there are many arts and crafts and activity tents within the festival. Unlike other festivals, Wheatland features impromptu jam sessions throughout the entire festival in addition to the main line up, which gives it the atmosphere of a folk Woodstock.
