How to Fix a Broken Flip Folder

Flip folders are important tools for marching band members to read music as they move along in formation. Flip folders attach to instruments with prefabricated clips. Folders without clips are even available for concert band instrumentalists to sit on music stands. Fixing a flip folder is a straightforward process requiring a few household items. Repairing your own folder is a wise way to save time and money.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace the clear plastic cover. Pull the plastic cover off of the prefabricated flip folder rings. Measure the piece of cellophane to the dimensions of the flip folder. Dot the cellophane where the rings will insert with washable marker. Cut out the cellophane cover. Punch fresh holes onto the dots. Wipe of any traces of washable marker with a damp cloth and put the cellophane cover onto the flip folder.

Fix cracks in the flip folder frame. Ask an assistant to gently pull apart the cracked pieces while you fill the open areas with permanent epoxy. Slowly close and fit the cracked pieces back together so they are flush with one another. Wipe away any residual epoxy with a dry cloth. Allow two hours for the glue to dry before handling the flip folder.

Replace the flip folder instrument clip, if necessary. Carefully snap off any dangling clip pieces without damaging the rest of the folder. Rub a flat, metal scraper over the surface to remove any plastic burrs. Layer the inner side of one metal prong end on an alligator clip with permanent epoxy. Position the clip so it is at the bottom center of the folder. Press the inner side into the back of the flip folder. Hold for 60 seconds to secure the bond.
