Loosen the lugs around the metal rim of the drum with a drum key. Twist the lugs to loosen them, in a process similar to loosening screws. Store the lugs in a safe place. Remove the metal rim from around the top of the snare drum to free the drum head.
Remove the drum head from the snare drum by lifting it off of the drum base.
Look for any loose screws in the interior frame of the snare drum. Tighten any loose screws. Use a screwdriver to remove a damaged tension rod. Purchase a replacement from a music store.
Examine the snare throw mechanism for any signs of wear. The snare throw mechanism allows for the tension adjustment of the snare wires. Remove the screws that hold snare throw mechanism if the snare throw looks damage or isn't working. A replacement snare throw is available at music stores.
Examine the snare wires. Broken snare wires cause the drum to sound dull. Cut off the broken strand with wire cutters if a snare wire is broken. Bend the remaining wire away from the drum head to prevent puncture during use.
Place the drum head onto the drum. Replace the metal rim over the circumference of the drum. Screw each lug into its socket, and tighten each lug until the drum head is secure.
