The Durango Bluegrass Meltdown, held in April, has been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of bluegrass music since 1995. The festival features three main stages, a barn dance, a "Saturday Night Celtdown" and acts performing in restaurants, bars, coffee houses and on the streets and sidewalks of downtown Durango. The Strater Hotel serves as the headquarters for the festival, and the Henry Strater Theatre, one of the oldest continually running theaters in Colorado, is the main venue.

In 1987, Maestro Mischa Semanitzky set in motion the events that would begin Durango's first classical music festival. The first season featured five concerts with 11 musicians from the Dallas Fine Arts Chamber Players, a group founded by Semanitzky. The festival has evolved into a multi-faceted summer music event, with multiple concerts at a number of venues. The mission statement of the festival is to "produce an exceptional summer music festival with musicians of the highest caliber; entertain, educate and delight audiences with the richness of classical music, and complement concerts with educational programs."

Family Festivo presents free concerts in Durango during the Music in the Mountains festival. Ballet Folklorico de Durango and local children's theater companies perform with the Festival orchestra in annual rotating productions of Peter and the Wolf, The Little Engine That Could or the Town Musicians of Bremen. Also, an Instrument Expo introduces children to the instruments being played during the production and teaches them how the instruments complement each other.
