Choral Music Festivals

International and national choral festivals occur in dozens of countries annually. Many such festivals also hold competitions in conjunction with the public performances. Germany, Austria and Italy have the largest share of such festivals. However, England hosts the Three Choirs Festival, which is one of the most prestigious in the world.
  1. U.S. Festivals

    • San Luis Obispo, Calif., has an international choral music festival and competition with the choirs preselected by judges. Tickets to the competition are available for purchase by the public. Every year, the Berkshires of Massachusetts holds a choral festival, which performs pieces from the classical repertoire. In addition, the Berkshire Choral Festival (BCF) offers singing vacations, which allow amateur or professional singers to participate in a choir during their holidays. The BCF also holds concerts and singing vacations in other countries such Austria and Canada. Missoula, Mont., also holds an international choral music festival.

    English and Irish Festivals

    • The Cork Choral Festival has been holding gala concerts, school concerts, and national and international competitions every year since 1954. Most performances occur in the Cork City Hall. The Festival received approximately 5,000 participants as of 2011. One of the oldest music festivals in the world is the Three Choirs Festival, which rotates every year between three English cities -- Gloucester, Worcester and Hereford -- each of which features a cathedral. England also holds the Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival.

    Continental European Festivals

    • Austria hosts a number of choral music festivals, including the International Franz Schubert Choir Competition and the International Anton Bruckner Choir Competition and Festival. Germany offers a few choral festivals such as the Badenia Music Festival, International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition and the International Gospel Choir Festival. Barcelona, Prague, Malta, Budapest and Amsterdam as well each has its own international choral festival.

    Other Festivals

    • Australia offers two festivals dedicated to choral performances, including the Festival of Voices in Tasmania and the Festival of Music which takes place in Adelaide in Southern Australia. Every year, South Africa holds the National Choir Festival which is both a competition and series of performances. The Mexican state of Puebla holds an international choral festival entitled "World Choral Festival of Puebla-Mexico."
