Fender Fat 50 pickups enhance bass and lower mid-range sound frequencies. This area of the sonic spectrum is often associated with "rich" or "warm" tones. Although a boost in this frequency range often results in abrasive upper mid-range tones, the Fat 50s are designed to dampen any harsh sounds. If the Fat 50 pickups are used in combination with a vintage amplifier, any aggressive sonic responses will go unnoticed.
Compared to other Fender pickups, the Fat 50s use additional metallic winding on each pickup. This aspect of construction is largely responsible for the enhanced frequency ranges mentioned in the previous section. The middle pickup uses reverse winding to invert the polarity of the pickup and eliminate humming sounds. Each pickup is connected to the guitar using Formvar wiring. Older Stratocaster guitars also used this particular type of wire, and it is often associated with vintage tone production.
The Fat 50 pickups are installed in a staggered arrangement. If the pickups have been properly mounted to the guitar, they will appear asymmetrical to one another. Although many pickups are offered in a variety of colors, the Fat 50s are only available for purchase in white. The Fat 50s are available for purchase as a set of three and are also sold individually.
