How Do I Wire 2 Amplifiers to My DJ Equipment?

DJs sometimes need the sound system to pack an extra punch. Whether a DJ is playing at a big party, an important gig or even practicing at home, wiring two amplifiers to a DJ mixer helps in giving the sound system some boost. An extra amplifier offers freedom to turn up the volume without worrying about pushing the speakers too hard.

Things You'll Need

  • DJ mixer
  • Audio mulitcore cable, known as an "audio snake," minimum of two inputs and four outputs
  • 10 XLR cables
  • 2 amplifiers
  • 4 speakers

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in, but do not turn on, the DJ mixer and both amplifiers. Turn the volume knob on both amplifiers to zero.

    • 2

Connect one end of an XLR cable to left output of the DJ mixer and the other end into Input one of the audio snake. Connect the right output of the DJ mixer to Input two of the audio snake with another XLR cable. The audio snake is labeled clearly.

    • 3

Connect one XLR cable from Output one of the snake to the left input of the first amplifier. The amplifier is clearly marked. Connect another XLR cable from Output one to the left channel of the second amplifier. Repeat this for Output two and the right channels of the amplifiers.

    • 4

Connect the left and right outputs of amplifier one to a pair of speakers with two XLR cables. Do the same with amplifier two and another pair of speakers.

    • 5

Power on the DJ mixer, then power on the amplifiers in this order to avoid possible damage to the speakers from the electrical signal created by powering on the DJ mixer. Increase the volume on the amplifiers to the desired level once the DJ mixer is turned on.
