Create an inventory of equipment needed at the mixing-desk position. The size and quantity of this equipment will dictate the size of the desk installation. Dimensions of the desktop is determined by the mixing board itself, but don't forget extra desk space for things such as hymnals and laptop computers. Equipment besides the mixer may include wireless microphone receivers, outboard processing equipment and amplifiers.
Locate or purchase a wood desk of suitable size and style to both accommodate your equipment and blend visually into the surroundings. Requesting donations from the congregation is an excellent way to find a desk affordably. If possible, choose a desk with drawers along one side. The drawers themselves may be handy for storage, or this area could be converted to an audio rack to mount outboard equipment.
Place your mixer on the desk, aligned with the left edge. Use the plywood strips to outline the mixer or its feet to create a barrier to keep in place against bumps. If the top of the desk is too small, screw a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood directly into the top of the desk. The plywood can be trimmed and finished to match the desk if desired.
Remove the drawers and cross supports if you wish to add rack-mounting capability to your desk. Mount the rack-mount rails in the space where the drawers were removed so that the mounting holes for the rails are level and separated by 17.72 inches to accept standard rack-mount equipment. Drill holes in the top and/or the back of the desk to route cables. You are ready to mix in style and comfort.
