Instructions

    • 1

Attach the lights you plan on using for the show to a lighting truss. Trusses come in a variety of sizes, each of which is designed to support a specified weight. In addition, purchase clamps that are specifically designed to secure the individual types of lighting. This equipment can be purchased at vendors such as Global Truss.

Connect DMX-enabled light sources to a lighting controller using DMX cables. DMX controllers such as the Chauvet Obey 70 are available for purchase from DJ lighting vendors such as Guitar Center and Musician's Friend. These controllers function by assigning identification numbers to light sources and sending specific commands to each light. Refer to the documentation provided with your DMX controller in order to better understand the programming process.

Create a visual map of the performance area and stage setup in order to correctly position your lighting trusses. Use your stage lighting to create ambiance and highlight individual performers. Your lighting units also need to be in range of an electrical outlet or extension cord. Creating a functional plan before arriving at the show helps ensure proper orientation and use of lighting equipment.

Use special lighting effects such as strobing or chase sequences at climactic moments of a musical performance in order to accentuate the theatrical elements of the show. Employing these powerful effects too frequently may oversaturate the audience.
