How to Use a Behringer Ultracurve

Behringer is a German audio equipment manufacturer specializing in mixers, equalizers and recording devices. The Ultracurve is an equalizer unit and was Behringer's first digital signal processor. Equalizers let you shape the tone and frequency range of a sound source by boosting the level of selected frequencies. For example, if you are mixing a live vocal, use the Behringer Ultracurve to reduce feedback, dip harsh frequencies and boost quieter frequencies to create a more rounded and sonically pleasing audio spectrum.

Things You'll Need

  • Mains supply adapter (supplied with Ultracurve)

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a mains power-supply adapter to the socket on the extreme left of the rear panel. Plug the mains adapter -- the two-pin plug that comes with the Ultracurve -- into the power supply at the wall.

    • 2

Connect the female end of two XLR speaker cables to the male XLR output jacks. Connect the cable for the right speaker to "Out r" and the cable for the left speaker to "Out l." These sockets are on the right of the rear panel.

    • 3

Connect the male end of an XLR cable to a microphone. Connect the female end to the male XLR input socket on the extreme right of the rear panel.

    • 4

Turn on the Ultracurve by pressing the "Power" button on the extreme right of the front control panel. This brings up the LED user interface. The Ultracurve has a pair of dual-function dials to the immediate right of the LED display. Push the top dial to scroll up through the frequency-range menu and push the bottom dial to scroll down.

    • 5

Observe the "Meter" display on the left side of the Ultracurve. If the red light at the top of the display is illuminated, cut the selected frequency range by pressing the lower dual-function button.

    • 6

Adjust the frequency parameters by scrolling the dial up or down. Have your vocalist sing into the microphone and adjust the parameters. Listen to the effect of each adjustment and set the parameters so that they enhance the natural characteristics of the voice. For example, cut the frequency range below 80Hz by turning the dial to the left. This reduces the "popping" sound of human vocals (See Reference 3).

    • 7

Press the "Bypass" button to mute the effect of the Ultracurve. This lets you hear the sound source without any equalization, letting you compare the "dry" sound with the equalized sound.

    • 8

Save your preferred settings. Each sound source is different. For example, a male baritone voice will call for a different equalization setting than a female soprano. For convenience, the Ultracurve has 100 memory patches that enable you to save frequency settings for various applications. Press and hold the "Memory" button; when prompted, select "Store."

    • 9

Select "Memory" and then press the "Page" button to call up previously saved equalization settings. Press the top dual-function button on the right of the LED display to scroll up through the menu; press the bottom button to scroll down.
