How to Layout a Mixer for a Church

Sound mixing is a complicated process that requires knowledge of audio mixers, electronics and music. Mixing sound for a church can be difficult because of the different sounds created in a church, including music and speaking. Setting out a basic layout for a sound mixer starts out straightforward, but can quickly become complicated. Instructions

    • 1

Place the mixer close to the church stage. You can place the mixer behind or beside the stage. Remember, you will have to ensure all cables can reach the mixer for the best sound quality.

    • 2

Connect each input to the mixer using audio cables. Most churches have one or more microphone, guitar, drum, vocal, piano or organ inputs, along with several others.

    • 3

Connect the output cables to the church speakers.

    • 4

Connect all electrical wires to the electrical outlets. Test the sound.

    • 5

Adjust the mixer dials to the desired setting. Make sure the vocals are slightly louder than the music and everything is balanced correctly. Different mixers will have different buttons and dials to produce different effects. Have someone sit in the audience to help judge the best sound quality.

    • 6

Label each knob and dial once it is set in the desired location, so that if anything is moved or changed you can quickly return it to the correct place.
