How to Build a Kiln for Lumber

A kiln is a special stove or burning device used in firing pottery and ceramic art pieces. One of the heat sources for a homemade kiln is wood or lumber. It is best to build a kiln for lumber outdoors rather than in the home. Electric kilns are better for indoor use. With a few materials you have lying around the house and that you can pick at a local hardware store, you can easily build a wood-burning kiln for your ceramic and pottery firing projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify a location in the yard of your home to build the kiln for lumber. You should choose an area that is at least 15 feet from your home or other buildings on your property and not too close to trees or bushes that can catch fire.

    • 2

Build the kiln foundation. Place cinder blocks side by side to create the bottom of the kiln. You can use as many cinder blocks as you need to make the kiln as wide as you want it to be.

    • 3

Build the retaining wall. Stack bricks on top of three sides of the cinder blocks. Leave the opening in the front for putting pieces into the kiln. Stack the bricks on top of each other so that you have three walls that stand 8 to 10 inches high.

    • 4

Place the square metal grate on top of the brick walls. The grate should be wide enough to lay on top of the three brick walls. Secure the metal grate to the top by placing bricks around the perimeter of the grate.
