Identify a music contest which interests you and for which you are eligible. Some contests are restricted to current students in 12th grade or lower, while others are open to currently-enrolled college and university students. Professional-level classical music competitions commonly place an upper age limit of 30 years old on instrumental musicians; the Gaudeamus competition in the Netherlands has a higher age limit of 35.
Complete a paper or online application form for the contest, and submit this before the application deadline. Many music contests require you to pay a non-refundable entry fee.
Choose the pieces of music, or songs, you will play at the contest. Certain competitions have required repertoire lists, while others allow for free choice. Make sure you order the edition of a score or instrumental part specified for the competition repertoire.
Learn to play all the music for the competition. This may take a great deal of time and patience. Work with a teacher or coach for feedback on your performances well in advance of the contest, and work on her suggestions for improvement.
Decide whether you will perform from memory, or with music in front of you. If you are performing from memory, practice doing so for at least several weeks before the contest.
Make necessary travel arrangements and accommodation reservations for the competition. If you are traveling internationally, choose a travel schedule or route that minimizes your chances of jetlag and fatigue on the outbound journey. Apply for any necessary travel permits or visas for entry to the country hosting the competition.
