Guide to the BBE 422A Sonic Maximizer

The BBE 422A Sonic Maximizer is a two-channel analog electronic component designed for studio and live music applications. It is a signal processor that enhances the sound of signals passing through it, giving them a more clear and open sound. Although the exact process by which it works is described in 42 different patents, the Owner's Manual for the 422A explains that it basically works by delaying certain frequencies and changing their volume levels.
  1. Applications

    • BBE designed the 422A to operate in many different environments. Live performers can use it by connecting it between the mixing console and amplifier or, for a powered mixer, in the graphic equalizer connection loop. In studio applications, it can be connected between the mixing console and tape recorder in both direct recording and mix-down applications. For playback, the tape deck's outputs get connected to the 422A, which then goes to the mixer's inputs. It can also be used between the playback and recording decks when making tape copies and even in a paging system where it gets wired between the preamp output and industrial amplifier.

    Connections

    • The BBE 422A is relatively easy to connect thanks to its uncluttered back panel. Each of its two channels features an input and output, offering both RCA phono jack and 1/4-inch phone jack connections. It also features an additional 1/4-inch jack for a remote connection to turn the device on and off. The audio connections are designed to accept an industry-standard signal with an average level of -10dBu, but a peak level of +16 dBu.

    Controls

    • The front panel of the BBE422A is equally uncomplicated. It features a power switch that can be defeated by a remote trigger connection and a function switch that sets the processor to bypass its sound enhancement circuits, allowing the user to quickly see its effect as compared with an unenhanced signal. Its process switch changes the way that the BBE422A treats high frequencies between using a "manual" preset expansion ratio and an "auto" system that varies the expansion ratio depending on the needs of the signal. Finally, each of the two channels has two knobs, "lo contour" and "definition," modifying the processor's effects on low- and high-frequency bands, respectively.

    Specifications

    • BBE builds the 422A to introduce as little distortion and noise into the signal chain as possible, as evidenced by its Total Harmonic Distortion rating of less than 0.1 percent and its absolute noise rating of -87dBu. Depending on the model, it runs on either standard US wall power or the 200- to 240-volt power that is prevalent throughout the world. Either model consumes just 10 watts. It is 1 3/4 inches high, 19 inches wide and 5 3/4 inches deep, fitting in a 1U standard single rack space. Its 4.5-lb. weight makes it relatively easy to move.
