How to Balance the Monitors & Mains in Live Sound

Performers need to hear themselves in order to perform properly, which necessitates a strong on-stage audio monitor mix. This often comes into conflict with the main mix for the audience, especially for those who sit close to the stage. Moreover, the sound bouncing around on-stage tends to get muddled and distorted by time it spills out into the audience. The challenge is for audio technicians to provide performers with a precise monitor mix, while not making it so strong that it taints the main mix for the audience.

Instructions

    • 1

Sound check the monitor mix first with the main speakers off. Provide performers with specialized mixes that highlight their voices or instruments, if your equipment allows. Bring non-essential instrument levels down, rather then simply turning volumes up.

    • 2

Use in-ear monitor systems, or reduce the distance between monitor speakers and performer’s ears, by raising and angling the speakers as close to the performers as possible.

    • 3

Bring the overall monitor mix down a little if possible, once the proper balance between voices and instruments has been achieved.

    • 4

Sound check the main mix, once the monitor mix has been set. Set the optimum overall main speaker level, once the proper balance between voices and instruments has been achieved in the mains.

    • 5

Try lowering the monitor levels, if necessary to keep the on-stage mix from distorting the main mix.
