WMA to WAV Converters

While the WMA format is widely used and compatible with all Windows systems, not all portable audio players support the file extension--including iTunes. Most audio players support WAV file playback, however, even if the format does create files that are much larger in size than their WMA counterparts. Most programs that convert WMA files to WAV are free to use and even allow users to convert the files to other audio formats, such as OGG, FLAC and the widely compatible MP3 format.
  1. ITunes

    • ITunes can convert WMA files to the WAV format. ITunes does not support the WMA format and will convert any WMA file in a user's music library to another audio format. The audio format to which it is converted can be chosen by the user in the Import Settings section of the Preferences menu.

    FreeRIP Basic

    • FreeRIP Basic is a freeware program developed by MGShareware that can convert WMA files to a variety of formats, including WAV. There is also a paid version of the program called FreeRIP Pro that is optimized for multi-core processors and can convert audio files faster than the free version. It is only compatible with Windows systems.

    Free MP3 WMA Converter

    • The Free MP3 WMA Converter can also convert WMA files to the WAV file format. The Koyote Soft program is free to download without any limitations, although an enhanced "plus" version is available at a cost. All versions are compatible with Windows, but not Mac or Linux operating systems.

    Free Audio Convert Wizard

    • Free Audio Convert Wizard can convert WMA to WAV and a variety of other formats such as M4A, FLAC and MP3. It is free to use, but unlike FreeRIP, there is no paid version; all its features are completely unlocked without having to pay. It is only compatible with Windows systems.

    DRM Encrypted Files

    • Not all WMA files can be easily converted into WAV, no matter what program is being used. Some WMA files are encrypted with DRM (Digital Right Management), which restricts how the audio file can be used. However, if the DRM encryption still allows for the WMA file to be burned to a CD, that CD can then be ripped back to the computer. All DRM is then removed from the WMA, and it can then be converted using any WMA conversion program.
