How to Convert M3U Music to MP3 Format

An M3U is a type of music file that condenses entire MP3 music playlists into a single extension. The format originally applied only to Winamp media, but in recent years has become available to a host of digital music programs. By extracting the embedded information, you can convert a single M3U file into an entire list of MP3 files.

Instructions

    • 1

Drag the M3U file to your desktop. This will allow you to easily access it when you're ready to begin the conversion process.

    • 2

Choose a music program that reads M3U files. Winamp is the standard M3U reader, but you can also access and convert these files using software like iTunes, MP3 Tag Assistant Professional and Music Tag Editor. You can download iTunes or Winamp free from the Internet (see Resources).

Click your M3U file and drag it directly onto the main icon of your chosen software. If you do not know where to find the program on your computer, just double-click the M3U file and you should see a window with a list of available programs, allowing you to select the software of your choice. The software will open and a list of MP3 files will automatically appear, either on your Winamp Playlist Editor, iTunes Music Library or other program.

Save or burn your MP3 files. If you quit your selected program, your MP3s will save automatically for later use. If you want to burn them to a CD, insert a blank CD in your CD-ROM drive and use the "Burn" feature provided by your software.
