How to Convert CD-R to MP3

One of the best parts of the advent of digital music is the relative ease in transferring music between any format you want. If you have music stored on a CD-R, there are many straightforward ways to \"rip\" it onto your computer and then convert it to a series of MP3 music files. Apple's iTunes software is one of the easiest programs to use that does this, and is available for both PCs and Macs.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install iTunes from Apple.com (see Resources).

    • 2

Insert the CD-R into your disk drive. If an Autoplay window pops up, close it without selecting anything.

    • 3

Open iTunes. On the left sidebar, the CD will be listed under \"Devices.\" Click on it, and all the audio files on the CD will appear listed in the main list section.

    • 4

Go to Edit > Preferences. Under the General tab, click \"Import Settings\" and then select \"MP3 Encoder\" in the drop-down menu next to \"Import Using.\" Press OK. (In versions prior to iTunes 8, instead of the General tab, click on the Advanced tab, then \"Importing.\")

    • 5

Select all the audio files on the CD by selecting the top-most file, pressing and holding \"Shift,\" and then selecting the bottom-most file while Shift is still being pressed.

    • 6

Right-click on any of the highlighted files and select the \"Create MP3 Version\" or \"Convert to MP3\" option. All of the files on your CD will then be ripped onto your computer in MP3 format. By default, they will be saved in your \"My Music\" or \"Music\" folder, in the iTunes\\iTunes Music subfolders.
