How to Share Music With Different Users

It is possible to share music with other users in Windows by using copy and paste. This isn't ideal, however, if you have limited space on the drive. Music files usually take up 3 to 5 MB of space, which can add up if you have hundreds or thousands of files. The easy way around this is to allow Windows to share the music folders with other users or configure the media play to allow streaming.

Things You'll Need

  • Network connection
  • Windows Media Player

Instructions

  1. Sharing Folders

    • 1

Right-click the folder containing the music files and select "Properties".

    • 2

Go to the Sharing tab and click "Share".

    • 3

Click the drop down menu and change it to "Everyone". Alternatively, click individual names if you do not wish to share with all users.

    • 4

Click "Share" and then "Close". The users you specified will be allowed to open the specified folder and play the music even if your account contains a password. Users who are not on the same computer can access the files by clicking the "Network" icon in the start menu and logging in.

    Windows Media Player

    • 5

Launch the player by clicking the icon in the taskbar or searching for it in the start menu.

    • 6

Click "Stream". If you're in the "Now Playing" view, click "Go to Library" to find the Stream tab.

    • 7

Click "Automatically Allow Devices to Play My Media".

    • 8

Click "Stream" again and then "More Streaming Options".

    • 9

"Show Device on" should say "Local Network". Click the drop down menu to adjust, if necessary.

    • 10

Change any options that say "Blocked" by clicking "Allow All" and then "OK" to accept.

    • 11

Look in the left pane beneath "Other Libraries". Other computers on the network will be listed here and can play your music by choosing the computer's name in the list. If the music is being shared between two different computers on the same network, both must have Windows Media Player 11 or higher installed to access streaming.
