How to Make Music With Mixcraft

Mixcraft is a low-cost recording program available for the PC. As of 2010, the most recent version of the program is Mixcraft 5. Using Mixcraft 5, amateur and professional musicians and recording engineers can make multitrack digital recordings of music complete with effects. Mixcraft also features an easy-to-use interface.

  • Microphone, MIDI controller and/or instrument

Instructions

      Hook up a microphone, MIDI controller and/or instrument (guitar, keyboard) to your computer.

      Open Mixcraft.

      Click the "Record Yourself Or Your Band" option in the "New Project" window.

      Click "File > Preferences."

      Click the driver you wish to use: Wave, ASIO or WaveRT.

      Click the arrows next to Default Recording Device (Input) and Playback Device (Output) and select the settings that apply to your recording and playback devices. For example, if you want to record with an external audio interface like an M-Audio Fast Track Pro, select this for your Input device.

      Click the "OK" button.

      Click the "arm" button on an "Audio Track."

      Click the "Record" button, which is the button with the red circle on it. Sing and/or play your instrument into your input device.

      Click the "Stop" button, which the button with the green square on it, when you are done recording your take.

      Click the "arm" button on the "Audio Track" to disarm it from recording.

      Repeat Steps 8 through 12 using different audio tracks to create a multitrack recording.

      Click the "fx" button on each "Audio Track" to apply effects like reverb, EQ and compression to each corresponding track.

      Click "File > Save." Enter a name in the "File name" field and click the "Save" button to save your project.
