How to Capture Audio Files

While using one's computer, it's not uncommon to hear sounds, music or audio programs one would like to save for future reference. Unless you know how to record, or capture, audio with a computer, it can be difficult to save the files for later use. Free programs on the Internet mean just about any computer with any operating system can capture audio and save it in a variety of audio formats. The files then be available to add to an MP3 player or other device.

    • 2

Download the audio program and save it to an easy-to-find location.

    • 3

Install the audio program by clicking it and following the instructions within the program.

    Capturing audio

    • 4

Choose an audio source one wishes to record. It could be from a video, a podcast, a game or any sound one can hear through the computer's speakers.

    • 5

Run the audio-capturing program. If using MP3myMP3, enter the recording section by clicking the "record" button once. Click "input" and then select "wave out mix." This will allow recording of any sound audible in your computer.

    • 6

If using Audacity, select "wave out mix" from the toolbar in the upper-right corner.

    • 7

Play the audio source you'd like to capture. Test the capturing program by hitting "record" while the audio is playing. The VU meter in the audio program should show activity matching the sounds. If not, adjust the recording level in the program until the meter shows motion.

    • 8

Stop recording after a few seconds and save the test file in your desired format. Stop the playback of the source file as well.

    • 9

Play back your test file to ensure the recording worked properly. If not, repeat steps 2 through 5, adjusting volume as necessary.

    • 10

Hit "record" on the audio program and quickly after, play the audio source file. Let it record until the source file finishes playing.

    • 11

Stop the recording program. Save the file in the desired audio format and with a name that one will remember.

    • 12

Play back the new audio file to ensure it recorded properly.
