Insert the included MIDISport CD-ROM into your computer's disc drive if you wish to take advantage of advanced features (particularly the ability to operate the interface using multiple applications simultaneously) using Windows XP or later. Additionally, Windows 98, ME and 2000 users must install the software. Mac OS X users do not need to install the software, nor do users of Windows XP or later who wish only to use the interface with one program at a time. To install, click the installer icon and follow the on-screen instructions.
Insert the USB connector into an available USB port on your computer (indicated by an image of a crooked trident). The Uno interface is bus powered, meaning that it requires power from your computer in order to run. For this reason, you should connect to a USB port directly on your computer, and not to an external hub or keyboard port, as these contain less power.
Connect the round "To MIDI Out" connector to a MIDI keyboard, controller keyboard or other controller device (any MIDI device that uses keys or buttons to play music notes). You will find the words "To MIDI Out" on the appropriate connector, and the words "MIDI Out" on the back of your keyboard or other controller.
Connect the round "To MIDI In" connector to a MIDI sound module, via the corresponding "MIDI In" jack, if you have access to such a device. The "MIDI In" connector is purely optional, as your computer can also function as a sound module for your MIDI controller.
Open a computer program with MIDI sequencing abilities, such as GarageBand, Logic or Pro Tools, or a free program like LMMS, Rosegarden or QTractor. When your program opens, you will need to optimize it for MIDI sequencing by locating and selecting the "Create MIDI Track" option found on your menu bar. Some programs will only offer an "Add Track" or "New Track" option, after which you can specify that you want to create a MIDI/Software/Virtual track (as opposed to a raw audio track). Your track is just a recording space, indicated by a horizontal bar.
Begin playing your MIDI controller (the device connected via "MIDI Out") to transmit music-note data to your PC through the Uno interface. If you have a sound module connected, you should hear your notes playing through the input device. You can select a voice (a sound setting, like a melody sound or bass sound) using your computer software or sound module, by accessing the "Voices," "Virtual Instruments" or "Software Synthesizers" menu.
