How to Use Brasso on CDs

Although Brasso is typically used to clean brass instruments, it is also very effective at repairing scratched CDs. The fine, gritty texture of Brasso makes it a good polishing agent for buffing out the scratches on a CD. When used this way, Brasso will slowly wear away the top plastic layer of the read/write surface of the CD and smooth out the scratches that are causing the CD to skip.

Instructions

    • 1

Squirt a few drops of Brasso onto a soft cloth.

    • 2

Rub the Brasso on this cloth into the scratches on your CD.

    • 3

Apply moderate pressure when rubbing the CD, until you see the scratches begin to wear away.

    • 4

Continue rubbing the CD with this cloth, adding more Brasso if necessary, until most of the scratches have disappeared.

    • 5

Pour some rubbing alcohol onto another clean, soft cloth.

    • 6

Wipe the Brasso residue off of the CD using this cloth. When wiping, start at the center of the CD and move across the CD to the outside edge to avoid scratching it.

    • 7

Air dry the CD completely before using it.
