How to Build a DJ Coffin Case

Advancements in electronic and digital music have created new opportunities and creative outlets for performers and composers. Over the last half-century, the art of DJing has evolved from playback of popular tunes to real-time electronic music performance and improvisation. DJs often carry an eclectic grouping of equipment with them for their performances, ranging from turntables to laptop computers. Although the term "coffin case" often references guitar cases designed in a gothically styled shape, DJ coffin cases are much more conservative in design due to the rectangular or square shapes of most equipment By following a few simple steps, you can quickly acquire the necessary materials and begin constructing your own protective DJ coffin case.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the DJ equipment you will be using in your preferred configuration, and measure the dimensions of the grouping. Take note of the length, width and height of the equipment.

    • 2

Purchase a durable, plastic shell case from your preferred home improvement retailer that exceeds each dimension of your combined equipment by at least an inch. If your case does not include a lid, purchase a matching top as well. In addition to these materials, obtain foam paneling that matches the dimensions of your new plastic case.

    • 3

Cut the foam paneling to match the dimensions of the bin. Use tape to temporarily secure the foam to the inner surfaces of the case. As this is a temporary measure, you may use any type of tape that you prefer for this step, so long as it does not leave residue.

    • 4

Place your equipment inside the case. If the addition of the foam makes it difficult to place all of your desired gear inside, remove the foam and use the scissors to thin the foam paneling by trimming away unwanted portions of the foam. After you have made the final adjustments to the foam, glue the panels to the inner faces of the case using a strong adhesive such as Super Glue, Gorilla Glue or Krazy Glue.

    • 5

Cut an additional section of foam paneling to the dimensions of the lid. Temporarily adhere the panel to the bottom of the lid using the tape. Test the compatibility of the lid by placing the equipment inside the case and then securing the top. If you are unable to properly close the lid due to the width of the newest foam addition, remove the paneling and use the scissors to thin it.

    • 6

Remove the equipment from the case. Mount the handle to the side of the case using the screwdriver and mounting screws. Ensure that the screws have not worked their way through the foam paneling entirely.

    • 7

Place the equipment back inside the bin and secure the lid to the case. For added protection, wrap bungee cords around the outside of the case.
