How to Build a Display Case for Comics

Showing off your comic book collection using a display case is safer for the comic books than taking them out individually to show them off. The case serves two purposes. It protects the comic books and makes it easy for people to see your collection. When you decide where to display the comic books, you must avoid placing them in direct light, as it will fade the comics.

Instructions

  1. Making Your Case

    • 1

Decide how many comic books you want to display in the case. This determines the size you need. Most comic books measure 7.25 inches wide by 10.5 inches tall. In order to make your display look professional, you need to make the show space at least 8 inches wide by 11 inches tall. Use that guideline to figure the size of your display. For example, to display two comic books side by side, your show space must be 16 inches by 11 inches. But, to display the same comics one on top of the other, your show space would have to be 8 inches wide by 22 inches tall.

    • 2

Have a piece of plywood cut for the back of the display case. Add 2 inches to both figures you determined for the show size. For example, if you are displaying one comic book, the plywood needs to be 10 inches by 13 inches. This leaves room for the frame, without taking away from the show space. Make sure the plywood isn't treated with any chemicals, such as arsenic.

    • 3

Cut a piece of felt the size of the plywood. You can choose any color felt you feel brings out the cover of the comic book. Black is the most common color. Glue it to the plywood using a hot glue gun or craft glue.

    • 4

Prepare the sides of the case. The size of the sides is dependent upon the size of your display case. For one comic book, you need two side pieces that are 13 inches long and two pieces that are 10 inches long for the top and bottom. Determine the position of each piece for the display. You have to cut each a 45-degree angle into the end of each piece to form a frame.

    • 5

Use a dremel tool to route out a groove for the glass on the inside of each piece. The position of the groove depends on the thickness of your comic book.

    • 6

Attach the border, except for the top piece, of your display case to the back, felt-covered part. Lay the border pieces upside down on a flat surface. Put the plywood piece felt side down onto the border. Use small nails to attach the back to the border pieces. Nailing from the back prevents the nails from ruining the effect of the display case.

    Add the Finishing Touches

    • 7

Paint or stain the display case, if desired. Allow it to dry.

    • 8

Have a piece of glass or Plexiglass cut to fit the display box. It should be 1/2 an inch larger than the show space. For one comic book, the glass needs to be 8.5 inches by 11.5 inches. Many hobby or craft shops will do this for you.

    • 9

Place your comic book on the felt. Use adhesive corner picture anchors. Slide one onto each corner of the comic book. Remove the protective backing. Adhere them to the felt.

    • 10

Slide the glass into the display case. Apply a dot of craft glue on each end of the top border piece. Place the top border piece on the display case.

    • 11

Attach a frame hook to the back of the display case using a hot glue gun if you want to display it on the wall. If your display case is large, use more than one hook. Hang the display case on the wall or place it on a table. If you hang it on the wall, be sure it is on a wall stud.
