How to Build Your Own DJ Case

The active, performing DJ is both a musician and a technical wizard. With the abundance of available technology, aspiring and professional DJs use a wide variety of equipment to create their own customized systems. However, such customization does not allow for any one uniform method to protect and transport these fragile pieces of equipment. Therefore, it is often necessary to build a unique case to transport these tools of the trade.

Things You'll Need

  • Hard, protective shell with removable lid (plastic is recommended)
  • Interior cushioning (foam or soft material)
  • Mountable carrying handle
  • Screws and bolts
  • Plastic adhesive
  • Electric screwdriver
  • Electric drill
  • Bungee cord
  • Highlighter or marker

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Determine what exactly will be placed in the case. Dimensions and weight play an important role in this process. A case that is too bulky or heavy will become an impediment instead of a convenience to the traveling DJ.

    • 2

Take note of the quantity and dimensions of cables that will be be used to connect equipment within the case to equipment outside the case.

    • 3

Design a rough schematic of the proposed case, keeping in mind the location of inputs and outputs for cables, headphones and other items. Place these inputs and outputs in areas that are easy to access.

    • 4

Calculate the total weight of the designated equipment. If this sum becomes unreasonable, remove less vital equipment from the case.

    Constructing the Case

    • 5

Purchase a modular plastic shell conforming to the dimension requirements established previously.

    • 6

Adhere the foam or other protective material to the interior of case using a plastic adhesive. Ensure that this material is firmly attached, and that it's added dimensions still allow for room within the case for the equipment.

    • 7

Place the equipment in the case and mark the locations of input/output ports on the exterior of the case.

    • 8

Remove the equipment and drill holes through both the plastic shell and protective material large enough for audio cables to pass through with ease.

    • 9

Mount the carrying handle on one side of the case by screwing the handle into the plastic and inner protective material and affixing a bolt to the other end of the screw.

Do not mount the handle to the lid of the plastic shell.

Affix a tightened bungee cord around the case. This cord will be removed when the lid is to be removed.
