How to Create Groove Clips in Cakewalk

Cakewalk is a series of digital audio workstation (DAW) applications. The flagship application is called Sonar. In all versions of Sonar, it is possible to create, edit and use ]Groove clips, which are WAV files that contain metadata indicating their tempo, reference pitch and number of beats. Sonar interprets this data in real time, and is able to adjust the tempo and pitch of the Groove clip as the user desires.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Sonar. Once it loads, Click "File" menu and choosing "Open" Navigate to the project file containing the audio you want to turn into a Groove clip and double-click it. The project will open and Sonar will display it in the Tracks pane. Each track contains clips of audio data that makes up the overall song. Any of these audio clips can be converted into a Groove clip, but drum clips are easiest.

Find the audio clip you want to convert to a Groove clip in the Tracks pane and click it once to select it.

    • 3

Open the Loop Construction view by opening the "View" menu and choosing "Loop Construction View." The Loop Construction screen will appear. A representation of the selected audio clip's waveform will be displayed.

    • 4

Set the number of beats in the clip. Sonar will initially do this automatically by detecting the transients --- the peaks in the audio clip's waveform --- and placing beat markers at those points. This process is imprecise, however, so you may need to add or delete some beat markers. Click the "+" or "-" buttons in the toolbar to add or remove beat markers until there are the correct number.

    • 5

Set the tempo of the audio clip in beats per minute (BPM). This is done in the field labeled "Original BPM." By default, Sonar will set this value to the BPM of the overall project. This requires that you know the BPM of the audio clip you are converting. For example, if the audio clip is from another project that was 120 BPM, set that as the audio clip's BPM. Double-click the "Original BPM" field and enter the correct BPM.

    • 6

Save the Groove clip by clicking the "Save" button in the Loop Construction window's toolbar. The "Save As" dialogue will appear. Navigate to the folder in which you want to save the Groove clip. Give the Groove clip a name and click the "Save" button.
