How to Create an FX Intro

Audio effects, or FX, are used in movies, music, television, radio and countless other media formats. Video editors often find FX in large audio libraries with thousands of prerecorded sounds. Some productions record their own sound FX. You can create an FX intro with just one sound clip and audio editing software.

Instructions

Find the sound FX you wish to use in your intro and download them to your computer. You can find sound FX in online libraries such as Soundsnap or Soungle (see Resources). Many of these databases contain sounds you can download for free. You may also upload sound FX that you recorded yourself. Download all files to your computer's desktop.

Open audio editing software and import your sound files. Many audio editors use software like Logic Pro or Audacity to produce sound effects introductions. Make sure that your audio editor can play several tracks simultaneously unless you're using just one track. Select "File" and then "Import Audio" inside the program. Navigate through the browser window and select the audio track you wish to import. Click the "OK" button and repeat this step for each sound effect.

Arrange your FX in the audio time line. All audio editors have a time line at the top of the window. They help editors understand where in the track each sound comes in and out. Click and drag your sound clips around the time line into the order you want to hear them. For example, if you want a sound effect to enter at 4 seconds into the track, line up that sound clip with the 4:00 minute marker on the time line.

Trim your sound effect clips. You may have sound FX that run too long. Click the clip you want to trim once to highlight it. Move the long vertical line called the playhead to the point on the time line you want the clip to end. Click the "Edit" button and then choose "Split." Check the manual of your audio program for the exact instructions on splitting audio. Click the chunk of audio to the right of the line and press the "Delete" button on your keyboard.

Export your FX intro as one audio track. You must condense all of your audio tracks into one file track before you load your FX intro into your project. Choose "File" and then click the "Export Audio" button. Type a name for your track and save it to a folder you will remember. Click the "OK" button. The export process will begin automatically. Check your audio program's user guide to find the exact steps for exporting the track.

Insert your intro at the beginning of your audio or video production. Open the software project file you want to combine with the FX introduction. Click "File" and then select "Import Audio." Navigate through the browser window to find your FX intro track. Click the "OK" button. The program will automatically create a new audio track for your FX intro. Click and drag the FX intro clip to line up with the "0:00" marker on the time line. Your FX intro clip will now be the first thing you hear when you play your project.
