How to Edit a Song Clip in Soundbooth

Digital audio workstations, or DAWs, allow both amateur and professional music producers to refine and edit their audio productions using computer-based effects processors as opposed to traditional audio hardware. Adobe Soundbooth provides users with a number of popular mastering and editing utilities such as graphic equalizers, dynamic compressors and synthetic reverb. By implementing a few basic concepts, you can quickly begin editing your song clip and create professional results suitable for marketing and commercial distribution.

Instructions

    • 1

Import your selected song clip into Soundbooth using the "Open" command in the File menu. Soundbooth will create a visual representation of your song in the main display window. Using the mouse, you can select individual sections of your song for specific editing processes, such as increasing volume levels.

    • 2

Delete unwanted material at the beginning or end of your song clip by clicking and dragging over the designated material and pressing the "Delete" key on your keyboard. Use the zoom features on the main display of Soundbooth to create more precise, location-specific cuts.

    • 3

Copy-and-paste audio clips by clicking-and-dragging over the desired segment, selecting "Copy" from the Edit menu, repositioning your cursor in a new location and selecting "Paste" from the Edit menu. The "Copy" and "Paste" functions are valuable tools for reorganizing and structuring your song clips.

Adjust the equalization, or texture, of your audio clip by selecting the "EQ:Graphic" effect from the Effects menu. A new, similarly labeled tab will appear on the lower-left side of the display. Clicking this tab will create a new window in which you can adjust the low-, middle- and high-range frequencies of your production. If your song clip has excessive bass, click-and-drag the "Low" knob downward to reduce these frequencies. If your track contains abrasive hissing sounds, click-and-drag the "High" knob downward to produce a mellowing effect.

Save and compress your audio file in your desired format using the the "Export" feature within the File menu. A number of options are available, ranging from file types to desired audio sample rates. Each of these selections can significantly expand or reduce the "size" of your song clip. Smaller file sizes typically indicate increased file compression, which, in turn, reduces the overall quality of your audio track. Adobe Soundbooth provides users with a "Preview" function that allows users to hear the audible effects of their selections before saving the file.
