Connect your USB microphone to your PC if you have not done so already. If you have just purchased the microphone, check to see if the package includes a software installation CD. Often, you must install software drivers before you can use USB hardware. If your mic includes an installation disk, insert it into your disk drive and complete the installation.
Open Sonar. Sonar is available for both Mac OS X and Windows. If using Mac, open your "Applications" folder (inside the "Macintosh HD" folder on your desktop) to access it. If using Windows, click "Start" on your desktop and select "All Programs" to find Sonar.

Click the "Input" button in the left column of your horizontal audio track (on the left side of your screen, indicated by the title "Track 1"). The button is indicated by a capital letter "I." When the pop-up menu appears, use your mouse to select your USB microphone from the list of possible inputs.
Click the "Record" button at the top of your Sonar window. Begin speaking, singing or playing an instrument near your USB microphone. When you finish recording, press "Stop." The "Record" button looks like a triangle, and "Stop" looks like a circle.
