Turn the MPC1000 off. It is generally a good practice to turn MIDI devices off before making connections between them and other elements.
Connect one end of the included audio cable to the "Stereo Out" outputs on the back panel of the MPC1000. Connect the other end to your speaker system. You can also use headphones simultaneously by plugging them into the headphone jack at the front of the unit.
Connect a sampling source, such as a CD player or turntable, to the "Record" inputs on the back of the MPC1000 using a standard audio cable. The MPC1000 can record from any source that you route to this input, including a microphone attached to a mixer or audio interface.
Turn the MPC1000 on. Its internal software initializes, and its screen displays the default start-up message.
Press the "Mode" button, followed by "Pad 5 (Record)." The MPC1000 displays its Record page.
Press the arrow buttons to navigate to the "Input" field on the screen. Select "Analog."
Press the arrow keys to navigate to the "Time" field. Use the numbered pads to enter a sample length in minutes and seconds. The MPC1000 will record for this length of time, then automatically stop. Set the recording time a few seconds longer than required to give yourself time to interact with the sampling source. You can stop the MPC1000's recording function at any time by pressing "F6."
Press the "F6" button to begin recording. Press "Play" on the sampling source. The MPC1000 records the sample, then ceases recording when the configured time is up, unless you stop the recording automatically.
Press the "F4" button to play back the sample. If you are not happy with the results, press "F2" to try again.
Assign the sample to a pad on the MPC1000 by highlighting the "Assign" field with the arrow keys, then pressing the pad to which you want to assign the sample.
Press the "F5" key to tell the MPC1000 to keep the sample as-is and to preserve the pad selection made in the last step.
Repeat the sampling process for each pad until you have all the samples you want. Play back a sample by pressing its associated pad.
