Connect your audio source to the “REC IN” port on the back of the U40 using the supplied standard audio cable. The audio source can be a tape of CD player, or audio routed from your computer. The jack on the supplied audio cable is a standard 35 millimeter headphone jack that will fit in most device’s output port.
Connect the U40’s “LINE OUT” port on the left side of the device to your amplifier, stereo or mixer using the second supplied audio cable. Alternatively, you can use headphones by plugging them into the “PHONES” port on the back of the U40.
Connect your guitar to the “INST IN” port on the side of the U40 if you are using an electric guitar. The “INST IN” port can route the guitar’s signal to a connected guitar amplifier or the headphone output. The “INST IN” port accepts a standard one-quarter inch guitar cable.
Plug the U40 in using the supplied AC adapter and press any button to turn the unit on.
Press the U40’s “Record” button. The U40 enters standby mode. Pressing the “Record” button a second time will start recording.
Turn on your audio source and play the track containing the guitar phrase or solo you want to record. Be prepared to press “Normal Record” again to start recording when the song arrives at the point where the phrase begins. Note that the U40 can only record up to 36 seconds of audio.
Press “Normal Record” a few seconds before the phrase or solo begins. The U40 begins recording the desired section. At the end of the section, press the “Play/Stop” button.
Press the “Select” button until the LED light labeled “Playback Tempo” is lit.
Press the “Up” and “Down” buttons to adjust the playback speed. The slowest speed is half the original speed. As you press the “Up” and “Down” buttons, the LEDs next to the different speed options will light up, indicating the current playback speed.
Press the “Select” button until the LED labeled “Filter” is lit. The U40’s filter isolates the frequencies occupied by a typical guitar sound, reducing most accompanying instrumentation in volume. You don’t need to use this function if you can clearly hear the guitar phrase you want to learn.
Press the “Play/Stop” button. The U40 plays back the phrase or solo at the selected speed while preserving the original pitch. The audio quality may not be ideal, but will generally be sufficient for learning the desired phrase or solo. Press “Play/Stop” again to stop playback.
