How to Layer Samples on a Korg KP3

Korg KP3 is an effects sampler used by musicians and DJs to manipulate samples in real time and to create multiple effects by touching, sliding or tapping their finger over a touchpad. The sampler consists of more than 128 special effects, including delays, flangers, reverbs, a grain shifter and decimator. The lighting pad system provides visual cues to the DJ for the current program and effects. Korg KP3 system also includes a resampling function that lets you layer your effects and drums and play the existing samples.

Instructions

  1. Layering with Effects

    • 1

Record a sample that you wish to layer, and place it in one of the four banks on your Korg KP3 pad. Make sure that one other bank is completely empty to record your layered sample. For example, if your original sample is on bank A, one of the other banks -- B, C or D -- should be completely free.

    • 2

Choose the effect from the effect bank keys on the top of your Korg KP3. Each effect bank will have several sounds and tones in it. You can listen to them by sliding and tapping your finger over different points on the touchpad. Once you decide the effect that you wish to layer on your original sample, press the "Hold" button on the left side of the KP3 pad.

    • 3

Set the length of the layered sample by turning the knob on the upper right corner of the KP3 pad. The length depends on the sample you wish to create. So, if the length of your original sample is 8 bits and you want the effect on the entire sample, you should adjust the length of the layered sample to 8 bits as well.

    • 4

Adjust the "Effect depth" and "Effect release" keys on the left side of the KP3 as per your requirements. These determine the intensity of the effect that is being layered on your original sample.

    • 5

Press and hold the "Shift" key, then press the "Sampling/resampling" key on the right side of the KP3 pad. Press the bank key where you want your layered sample to be recorded. Remember, this has to be an empty bank. The resampled sample with effects layered on it will be automatically recorded onto the empty bank.

    Layering with Samples

    • 6

Record the two samples that you wish to layer on each other, and place them in two separate banks on your Korg KP3 pad. Make sure that one other bank is completely empty to record your layered sample. For example, if your original samples are in bank A and B, one of the other banks -- C or D -- should be completely free.

    • 7

Adjust the length of the resample by turning the knob on the upper right corner of the KP3 pad. You may want to increase the length as the layered sample should now accommodate sounds from two samples.

    • 8

Play the first original sample. Press and hold the "Shift" key, and then press the "Sampling/resampling" key on the right side of the KP3 pad. Press the empty bank key where you want your layered sample to be recorded. As your first sample is being recorded, play the second sample at the point where you want it to be layered on the first sample. The resampled sample will now consist of the first sample and the second sample from the point where you played it.
