Write a query letter to potential managers that can be sent by email or mail depending on whether you have paper press kits and CDs, or online press kits and MP3 files for your music. For a query email, make the subject specific, such as "Cult favorite indie band seeking manager who will accept unsigned acts."
Write your query e-mail in three paragraphs. The first should describe your band succinctly and mention anything that makes you stand out, such as a large local following, having worked with a celebrity or having a label show interest in you. The second paragraph should explain why you have identified the manager you are addressing as a good fit for your band. The third paragraph should provide your contact information, links to your website home page, social networking profiles and any music you have online.
Write a similarly structured letter if you are sending your query by mail. Follow standard business letter format.
Insert links to your electronic press kit and your music online if you are sending an email query. Include your paper press kit and your CD if you are sending query by mail.
Ask anyone you know in the music industry, including entertainment lawyers, other bands and owners of live music venues, for personal introductions to managers they may know. If you succeed in getting a meeting with one, prepare an elevator pitch that is the verbal equivalent of the query letter. Bring your press kit and music samples, and tell the manager what makes you unique and why you have selected him as a possible choice.
Send a follow-up email or letter if you have not received a response in four to six weeks. Mention your original message and the date it was sent, and reiterate all the information stated in the original query.
