How to Get Your Music on TV Shows

High-profile TV shows can turn an unknown band into superstars overnight. Such is the power of well-placed songs in TV shows and such are the dreams of most garage bands. Although the market to get songs on TV shows is hugely competitive, the one bit of good news for artists is that producers are very interested in using new music on their shows. It keeps their royalty costs down and enhances a show's reputation for being cutting-edge.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch all of the high-profile TV shows and write down any that use the style of music you make. There is no point sending off indie music to a show that only uses hip-hop, and vice versa. Make sure to note down the name of the production company that produces the show.

    • 2

Visit Music Business Registry (see Resources) and find out the name of the supervisor responsible for music at the relevant production companies.

    • 3

Burn off CDs and send them out to production companies, addressed to the correct supervisor. Send a CD, rather than other formats such as MP3s, and provide as much additional information as possible so they can categorise the music quickly.

    • 4

Send invites to your gigs to contacts at TV production companies and make sure to reserve a few free tickets for them at the door. If they are in town, they might just drop by.

    • 5

Busk outside the TV production studios. You need to try everything you can to get ahead of other artists vying for a slot on a primetime TV show. If you live near where a major show is being filmed, use that proximity to your advantage.
